Law Enforcement
Modern policing is a highly data-intensive activity with each officer collecting numerous statements, personal and vehicle details and incident reports in each shift. This data is normally captured in the traditional policeman's pocket book and various paper forms. This data is then transcribed in to a range of IT systems when the officer returns to the police station.
This paper-based system requires that a considerable proportion of an officer's shift is spent transcribing from written notes and that the officer or back-office staff must enter data from hand-completed forms in to the various IT systems. The correlation of data captured by different officers responding to an incident can be very time consuming.
Recent reports have established very clearly that the key to improving police visibility and hence the reassurance of the public is to release operational officers from administrative tasks. This is also what operational officers want.
The electronic police notebook, PRONTO releases officers and other staff from these administrative activities enabling them to maintain a more visible and responsive presence in the community. It enables considerable efficiencies in back-office data processing and can bring significant improvements to the responsiveness of the criminal justice system.
Benefits
- Operational officers no longer do paperwork
- Clean, validated data saves money in data processing
- Time is saved in correlating reports from multiple officers
- Improved responsiveness in the criminal justice system
- Officers' morale is improved
Customer feedback
One Kelvin Connect police customer noted in a recent press release that through using the Kelvin Connect PRONTO system, police visibility had increased: "police officers using PDA e-notebooks are 35% less likely to return to a police station after gathering information on their PDA e-notebook compared to police officers using traditional paper and pen"
They also noted that data quality has been improved: "data is being captured in a structured format at the point of contact with the public. Crime reports, Vehicular Accident reports, Conditional Offer Fixed Penalty Tickets and Witness Statements contain far greater detail and can be processed far quicker"
